Laser selection and leather qualification. Natural leather and verified laser-compatible synthetic leather are normally cut and engraved with a CO2 laser because organic sheet materials absorb the 10.6 µm wavelength; a fiber laser is not the standard choice for cutting leather. Results vary with animal source, tanning method, thickness, density, surface finish, dye, oil, moisture and batch. Full-grain, top-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, suede and purpose-made laser leather can all behave differently, so submit the exact hide or sheet for testing. Synthetic leather must have a supplier datasheet and written confirmation that it is free of PVC, halogens and other prohibited layers; never assume generic leatherette or coated fabric is safe. Check the SDS and supplier guidance for chromium, flame-retardant additives, adhesives and finishes before processing.
Applications, quality control and safety. CO2 laser cutting and engraving supports footwear uppers, wallets, belts, luggage tags, key fobs, patches, notebook covers, bags, jewelry and personalized gifts without mechanical tool contact. Production approval should use the real material and artwork to verify cut width, edge char, smoke staining, engraving contrast, legibility, stitch-hole strength, flexibility, odor, residue and cleaning method. Power, speed, focus, line interval, air assist, support and extraction must be tuned to the leather type and thickness; aggressive settings can deform, dry or weaken the surface. Use effective local exhaust, keep the bed, optics and ducting clean, and never leave cutting unattended because leather and scrap can ignite. Do not process PVC leatherette, unidentified coatings or mixed laminates. For a machine recommendation and sample test, provide material and SDS, tanning or synthetic composition, thickness range, maximum part size, artwork, batch target, required finish, extraction needs and destination power supply.
