What protective gas is required, and why?

Helium is generally used as the protective gas, which can control the plasma to a greater extent, thereby increasing the penetration depth and welding speed; moreover, it is lightweight and can escape, making it less likely to cause porosity.

Why are welds not penetrating, have pores, or look uneven?

Porosity is caused by gas trapped in the weld metal during solidification. In laser welding, the weld metal cools much faster than in conventional welding, so gas does not easily escape from the weld and remains trapped, forming porosity.
